Introduction

Lincoln Navigator front The 2007 Lincoln Navigator joins the all-new Lincoln MKX crossover and the renamed MKZ sedan, but it eschews the alphanumeric and keeps its real name. A fussy set of grilles clumsily recalls Continentals and Marks of the 1960s, but the look doesn't work here. Like the Ford Expedition on which it is based, the new Navigator gets a new frame and new four-wheel independent suspension, as well as an extended wheelbase version, dubbed the Navigator L. The longer version of the already massive 'Gator stretches the frame by 14.7 inches, adding an extra 25 cubic feet of cargo space. Even if you don't find the effect elegant, you certainly can't miss it, and that might be more important anyhow. Driving home the "more is more" theme are tons of chrome, a "powerdome" hood, and optional twenty-inch wheels. We'd be remiss if we didn't note that the new Escalade is available with 22-inchers.

History

Lincoln Navigator back A new grille that blends into chrome accents on the hood and headlamp assemblies make the 2007 version, which goes on sale this summer, easy to distinguish. A 300-horsepower V8 is the only available engine at launch.

The Navigator L is 14.7 inches longer than the already imposing standard Navigator and offers an extra 25 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row of seats. The 2007 Navigator features a new independent rear suspension that should improve the ride and handling. Four-wheel ABS and stability control system with Roll Stability Control uses gyroscopic sensors to help prevent the tall SUV from tipping.

Technology

Lincoln Navigator interior The Lincoln Navigator engineering team carefully looked at the needs and desires of Navigator buyers, then collaborated on the all-new luxurious interior to answer those needs. Details like satin-nickel accents on the center stack, binnacle inserts and door trim and chrome accents on cup-holder rings, steering wheel and door releases speak to Lincoln Navigator's fine craftsmanship. A touch of black on the center stack and instrument panel provides further emphasis of refinement. At night, the interior is bathed in Lincoln's signature cool-white lighting, creating a soothing atmosphere.

"The typical Lincoln Navigator owner is a check-every-box buyer," says Raj Nair, executive director, Body-on-frame Vehicles. "If there's an option, they want it. We set out to offer these demanding buyers more luxury, more features and a greater level of craftsmanship." Lincoln Navigator offers the elegance of genuine Dark Ebony or Anigre wood trim on the console and upper door panels. The wood trim is bookmatched so the grains are precisely aligned. For example, the coin-tray cover is laser cut from the center console wood trim for perfectly matched wood grain. The Navigator's interior features a flowthrough center console that sweeps up into the rectangular "eyebrows" that frame the dash panel. The strong graphic presentation is echoed in the shape of the instrument bezels, a design inspired by popular rectangular fashion eyewear.
