The new Volvo FH16 is the most powerful, comfortable and safe model ever built by Volvo Trucks. Among the highlights of the new model are an all-new 16-litre engine with a power output of 610 horsepower, an exclusive interior and body features, and an advanced active safety system.
The Volvo FH16 can be specified with a number of safety systems that contribute to its market-leading safety level. Active Cruise Control (ACC) utilises Doppler radar to automatically maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front. The ESP brake stabilisation system that prevents skidding and rollover in critical situations can now also be specified on 6x4 and 6x2 tractors. On trucks with Volvo's Electronic Brake System (EBS), there is a Hill Start Aid that makes it easier to move off from a standstill on an uphill gradient.
With the new Volvo FH16, Volvo once again offers a truck in the heaviest segment. It is based on the FH Series that was launched in autumn 2001, but it also features new technology that is unique to the Volvo FH16.

The heart of the Volvo FH16 is the all-new D16C engine. It is an in-line six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with a displacement of 16.1 litres, available with a choice of two power outputs, 610 and 550 horsepower. The D16C is a modern design with an overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder, unit injectors and the engine timing mechanism located at the rear of the engine. It is related in design concept to the D9A engine that was introduced in 2001. It is lightweight, has a low noise level and low fuel consumption, and is approved to Euro 3 standard. There is a choice of two manual transmissions for the Volvo FH16. Maximum torque is 2800 and 2500 Nm respectively, and this massive torque is available between 950 and 1500 revs a minute. The D16C can also be equipped with VEB, the Volvo Engine Brake, which offers up to 380 kW of braking effect.
