Introduction

BMW X5 front BMW's X5 line has needed an overhaul for a while now, and it got one for 2007. New 2007 BMW X5 features more interior room with a third row of seating, a new inline six-cylinder engine that makes 260hp — an even more powerful 350hp, 4.8L V8 is also an option — enhanced x-Drive all-wheel drive, 50/50 weight distribution, and more tech-oriented options than ever before, including standard run-flat tires, the BMW Assist Bluetooth system, an iDrive on-board control system, heads-up display, rear-view camera for parking, and a premium sound system that features 600 watts of power, Dolby 5.1 surround sound and 16 speakers. One of the most elegant, complete SUVs on the road just got a whole lot better.

History

BMW X5The second BMW X5 has all the qualities that made the first SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) such an innovative concept, and raises them to new standards. Being sold in approximately 580,000 units worldwide since the 1999 launch, the E53 BMW X5 has become an exceptional global success and still enjoys great attractiveness to this day. Of course the United States is the market where the X5 has had the maximum impact. Over 240,000 units form the E53 BMW X5 have been purchased in the U.S. alone. The new BMW X5 will be offered in the U.S. with either a 4.8-liter V8 boasting 350 bhp or a 3.0-liter straight-six with 260 horsepower. The new X5 is the only car in its segment available with both Active Steering system developed by BMW, and Adaptive Drive (a mixture of Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping Control). It is also the opening SAV to be fitted with run-flat tires in standard.

The dynamic character of the new BMW X5 is beautifully underlined by the muscular elegance of the exterior design, just like the adaptable and elegant interior. The inside of the E53 X5 was one of its trademarks. The interior of the new X5 combines highly sophisticated materials with abundant innovative options, offering a first-class ambience.

Technology

BMW X5 interior Though both a 3.0-liter Six and 4.8-liter V8 will be available—both all-wheel drive with six-speed automatic—only V8s were available this time around. And just as the new X5 is larger in every dimension than its predecessor, its engines are more powerful. The V8 boasts 350 hp and 350 lb.-ft. while the Six has 260 hp and 225 lb.-ft. This rig is no lightweight, especially when fully optioned with BMW's active steering and suspension, so that Six might feel overwhelmed by its task. The V8 had no such problems and, when you put your foot in it, sounded a lot like a Nextel Cup car that had graduated finishing school.

Since the new X5 measures 7.4 inches longer than the old one, lies on a wheelbase that's 4.5 inches longer and has run-flat tires and no spare, other options this year include that third-row seat that's now de rigeur in this class. The interior is superbly finished, and, along with those cupholders (front and rear), there's a nice-sized glove box and deep storage well in the center console.
